BOOTSBAU
EIN BOOT FÜR DAS BONTHE YOUTH RESOURCE CENTER.
Derzeit gibt es auf der Insel nur wenige Holzboote in schlechtem Zustand. Die Überfahrten sind für die Menschen kaum erschwinglich. Bei Defekten an den Booten kommen Handwerker aus der Hauptstadt Freetown angereist um Reparaturen auszuführen. Das ist zeitaufwändig und kostenintensiv.
Darum haben wir beschlossen für das Bonthe Youth Resource Center nicht nur ein Boot anzuschaffen, sondern zu bauen und den Ausbildungsbereich Tischlerei um den Bereich Bootsbau zu erweitern.
Bis zum 30. Juni 2017 arbeiteten der Bootsbauer und sein vierköpfiges Team gemeinsam mit vier Azubis der Tischlerwerkstatt des Bonthe Youth Resource Centers an der Fertigstellung. Nach Fertigstellung des 16m langen, zwei Meter breiten Bootes mit Kapazität für bis 50 Fahrgäste und Waren wurde es – wie es auch hier in Deutschland üblich ist – mit einer kleinen Einweihungszeremonie am 12. Juli zu Wasser gelassen.
Das Boot trägt den Namen „The Hamburg“ – als Dank an alle Projektunterstützer aus der Hansestadt:
unterstützte dieses Bootsbauprojekt großzügig und dankenswerterweise mit 11.000 € – für alle notwendigen Materialien und Manpower zum Bau des Bootes sowie den Kauf eines Außenbordmotors.
Der Bau und Betrieb eines centereigenen Bootes ermöglicht es den Azubis ebenso wie erfolgreichen Absolventen des BYRC, produzierte Waren auf dem Festland anzubieten. Hierdurch werden neue Märkte erschlossen, die Einnahmesituation des Centers und die Lebensumstände der Menschen auf der Insel erheblich verbessert. Zusätzlich kann das Boot zur Personenbeförderung eingesetzt werden und damit weitere Einnahmen liefern. Dies ist ein großer Schritt zur Sicherung der Nachhaltigkeit des Ausbildungszentrums. Zudem stehen vier frisch ausgebildete Fachkräfte für Bootsbau und Reparaturen zur Verfügung. Diese gab es bisher nicht auf der Insel.
Für neue Lehrkräfte wird die Attraktivität des Centers durch bessere Transfermöglichkeiten deutlich steigen.
A boat for the Bonthe Youth Resource Center.
Due to the island position of Bonthe the life for the people is even more compromised compared to the rest of the country. A lot of things for the daily life has to be brought from the mainland. It is as difficult to transport materials and products from the island to the mainland. At the moment the whole island has a “fleet” of just three boats which are in a very bad condition. Passages are hardly affordable. If a boat turns out to be damaged, a craftsman has to come all the way from the mainland in order to do the necessary repairs. This is time and cost consuming.
That is why we decided not just to organize an own boat for the Bonthe Your Resource Center but to build it ourselves with extending the carpentry by the department of boat construction.
Till the 30th of June 2017 the boat construction manager and his team of four people together with another four apprentices of the carpentry worked on the completion. The boat, which is 16m long, two meters wide and can carry up to 50 people and lots of goods, was launched into the water during a small and festive ceremony. It is called “The Hamburg” – a special thanks to all the supporters of the project in the Hanse town.
The Rotary Club Hamburg-Harburg supports the boat building project generously and kindly by donating 11.000€ for the required materials and helping hands for the construction and the purchase of an outboard engine.
The construction and operation of an own boat gives the students and graduates an opportunity to sell handmaid goods in the mainland. Hereby they can access new markets which improves the income of the center and the overall situation of the people on the island tremendously. Additionally, the boat can be used to transport passengers and provide even more income. This is a huge step towards a sustainable stability of the center. Four lately graduated experts in boat construction can help with the repair of potentially damaged boats.
The overall attractiveness of the center for new teachers has been upgraded significantly due to the better transport opportunities.
